Kelly was convicted on three out of four counts of producing child pornography and three out of five for engaging in criminal sexual activity to a minor.
He was acquitted on one count each of conspiracy to obstruct justice and conspiracy to obtain child pornography, as well as two counts of obtaining child pornography.
Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonzen, said her client had a “sense of relief” that the case was now behind her, and she felt prosecutors had closed their case against her. Bonjean said she is considering filing an appeal.
“If this jury concluded that he was guilty on the first three counts, would they care enough to consider the rest of the evidence? And he showed that he did. He did his job. He looked at each count separately. ,” Bonzen said out of court after the verdict.
The woman was one of five minors whom prosecutors accused Kelly of sexually assaulting four of them in the late 1990s by making explicit videos.
Kelly’s two former aides acquitted
Kelly’s co-defendants, Darrell McDavid and Milton Brown, were acquitted of all charges they faced.
McDavid, Kelly’s former accountant and business manager, was charged with conspiracy to obtain child pornography, conspiracy to obtain child pornography, and obstruction of justice. Brown, Kelly’s former assistant, was charged with conspiracy to obtain child pornography. Both pleaded not guilty.
McDavid’s lawyers Vadim Glozman and Beau Brindley praised the decision in a statement to CNN.
The lawyers said, “The jury found what we all knew. The government came up with a case that should never have been brought. It was based on the word of proven liars.” “We exposed them to the jury and the jury made the right decision.”
CNN has reached out to attorneys for Kelly and Brown for comment.
Victim testifies of sexual abuse
One of the witnesses at the trial, the 37-year-old woman, spoke in federal court under the pseudonym Jane and testified that Kelly began engaging in sexual acts with her at the age of 14 and began to engage in sexual acts with her when she was 15. Then he had sex with her. She said she had sex “hundreds” of times before she turned 18.
Jane testified that she met Kelly through her aunt, Sparkle, who was R.J. Kelly and had a romantic relationship with her. Jane was 12 or 13 when she met the singer.
At the time Jane traveled the world with a Christian hip-hop group whose members were her cousins. Prosecutors asked not to name the group to protect his identity.
Shortly after meeting, Jen said that she started spending more time with Kelly and Sparkle. She would watch Kelly and Sparkle record music and talk with Kelly about basketball and music. Jane testified that Kelly became her godfather, at which point her parents felt comfortable letting her stay at their house for nights or weekends without her parents or aunt.
“They’ll pretty much leave me and then leave,” Jane testified.
Jane said that she had a sexual relationship with Kelly when she was 14 and lost her virginity when she was 15.
When the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services launched an investigation into an allegation that Kelly had sex with Jane in April 2000, when she was 15 years old, Jane testified that she denied the relationship. She also testified that she later denied to Chicago police investigators that she and Kelly had a sexual relationship.
Jane, her parents and Kelly met for a meeting in 2002 when reports began to surface about the existence of a tape that showed the pair engaging in sexual acts. She said that Kelly admitted to her that he was having sex with her daughter.
Jane and her father received summons to testify before a grand jury in 2002. Jane testified that before appearing before the grand jury, she had a conversation with Kelly about “loyalty” and “denying our relationship and sex tapes.”
Jen testified that she lied to a grand jury in 2002 after she denied having sex and appearing in a sex video with the singer.
